Abuja Next supermarket on fire, sources say electrical surge caused fire.

According to a worker at the Next Cash and Carry shop in Abuja’s Jahi neighborhood, an electrical surge triggered the fire.

It began around 8 a.m. on Sunday morning on the first floor of the building, according to witnesses.

One of them, who talked to reporters, accused the fire department of being late to the scene.

He said, “The fire started around 8am. We called the fire service but the firefighters did not arrive on time. We made attempt to put out the fire but we couldn’t find the key to the fire truck stationed at the supermarket. The fire won’t have escalated if they had arrived on time. The fire was caused by an electrical surge.”

Ben Igwe, the FCT Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, said the police were on the scene to ensure the area was properly protected.

He went on to say that the store was barricaded to prevent hoodlums from robbing it.

The cause of the fire, according to Igwe, cannot be determined right away.

As at the time of submitting this report, the FCT fire service, the Federal Fire Service, the Nigerian Navy and Guards brigade’s fire unit, and fire vehicles from Julius Berger were still on the ground attempting to put out the fire.
