Justice John Adeyeye, the Chief Judge of Ekiti State, has released 69 awaiting trial inmates from the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Ado Ekiti.
People who benefited included those who committed minor offenses such as burglary and theft, as well as those who stayed in a detention institution over their sentence.
Adeyeye released the detainees during his first official visit to the detention institution since taking office in June 2021, according to a statement from the CJ’s office titled, ’69 inmates regain freedom in Ekiti.’
“Forty-five inmates were released unconditionally, 19 were released on bail, four were released on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Julius Ajibare, for having no case to answer, one’s case was struck out, while three bail conditions were varied,” the statement said.
Adeyeye urged the freed inmates to “be of good behaviour as the long hand of the law is awaiting anyone found disrupting the peace of society.”
Mr Olayemi Ojo, the detention centre’s controller, told the CJ that the facility, which was meant for less than 400 convicts, had been over-stressed by holding roughly 700 detainees.
