Only the driver and a woman survived the boat incident that occurred on Sunday at Zhigiri village in the state’s Shiroro Local Government Area, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).
The bodies of the seven victims of the incident have also been retrieved, according to Ahmed Inga, the agency’s Director-General, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Wednesday.
The accident happened while the boat was travelling to Dnaweto, a nearby community in the hinterland, for a naming ceremony, according to him.
The boat’s occupants, according to Mr Inga, numbered nine and set sail from Zhijigiri village to Dnaweto village.
The boat cruised on the water due to the continuing construction of the Zungeru hydroelectric power plant, according to him.
“The boat driver and a lady survived while seven person lost their lives to the unfortunate incident.
“The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and buried,” he said.
