The Federal Road Safety Corps says it has mobilized over 30,000 personnel for its special patrol, dubbed “Operation Zero Tolerance to Road Traffic Crashes,” to ease travel during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
As part of steps to ensure safe highways over the Yuletide, the Corps said it will deploy body cameras and ambulances in 46 locations across the country, including Lagos, Makurdi, Nasarawa, Sokoto, and other parts of the country.
According to Bisi Kazeem, the Corps Education Officer, the routes to be covered are: Akwanga-Lafiya-Makurdi; Jos-Bauchi-Gombe; Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Birnin Kebbi corridor; Katsina-Kano-Wudil-Dutse-Azare-Potiskum corridor; Kaduna-Saminaka-Jos.
Other corridors include Makurdi-Otukpo-Obollo Afor-9th Mile, Asaba-Abraka-Ughelli-Warri, Ibadan-Ogere-Sagamu, and Sagamu-Mowe-Lagos, among others.
In addition to breathalyzers, cameras, tablets, alcoholisers, and other technical equipment, it stated that patrol vehicles, advanced life support ambulances, heavy-duty tow trucks, medium and light-duty tow trucks, patrol motorbikes, extricating machines, reflective jackets, traffic cones, patrolites, and radar guns would be deployed.
The statement said, “In addition to the deployment of the above operational tools, and the quest for improved service delivery and effective patrol operations, the Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, said the FRSC has invested in advanced Information and Communication Technology to beef up its operations.
“The new technology which includes body and vehicle cameras which have been fully deployed shall be used during the patrol operations and for surveillance and traffic monitoring, rescue operations and real-time information gathering for decision-making.”
During the patrol, the Corps is expected to work alongside special marshals, police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Department of State Security, and others.
